The future of surgery: Robotics

Unconventional and innovative methods of surgery are becoming popular because of the increasing demand for faster recovery period, precision detailing, and reduction of human errors. Consequently, in an effort to address these concerns, medical science has worked on implementing robotic surgery.

Impact of robotic surgery on medicine
CNN news affirms that machines—like the most common robotic surgery tool the ‘Da Vinci,’ a keyhole surgery method which allows surgeons to control robot arms from a console that provides a three-dimensional image of proceedings—have had a huge impact on surgery.

Meanwhile, this NBC News article attests the benefits of surgery on patients who’ve had robotic operations. They had less hospitalization time than other patients who’ve undergone conventional procedures, and complications were less likely to develop among robotic surgery patients.

In a robotic operation, a computer-controlled and self-powered device is used which helps surgeons manipulate complex procedures easily. Among the surgeons who specialize in field are Women First founder Cristian Andronic, who focuses on advanced gynecologic and robotic pelvic reconstructive surgery, and Alexandre Mottrie a urologist specializing in laparoscopic and robotic surgery.

Although many believe that robots may not totally replace surgeons, others see no doubt over the preponderance of robotics in transforming the field of surgery and pushing the boundaries of traditional medicine in the future.
